Intel Core 2 Quad Q6700

KentsfieldLGA 775Launched Q3 2007

Native LGA 775

Drops into a supported LGA 775 board as it is; check the board's CPU list. How to check.

Intel Core 2 Quad Q6700: 4-core, 2.66 GHz, Kentsfield, LGA 775, 1066 MT/s FSB, 8 MB (2 x 4 MB) L2, 95 W TDP.

The quicker of the two Kentsfield Core 2 Quads: a 266 MHz bus clock times 10 gives 2.66 GHz, on the same 1066 MT/s bus, 8 MB of L2 (2 x 4 MB) and 65 nm process as the Q6600. It arrived in Q3 2007 and only as G0, sSpec SLACQ, CPUID 6FB. Its heat rating depends on whom you ask. The archived ARK page shows 105 W and a 62.2 °C Tcase, which are the B3 Q6600's figures, while Intel's Q6000 datasheet puts the Q6700 on the 95 W thermal profile with a 71.0 °C Tcase, and Wikipedia also says 95 W. The table follows the datasheet. VID, the voltage the chip asks the board for, runs 0.85 V to 1.5 V. VT-x and Enhanced SpeedStep are present; SSE4.1 is not.

A BIOS needs a microcode update matching the CPUID (and, for Xeons, the LGA 771 platform ID). See LGA 771 Xeon microcode and how to read your stepping.

Mod notes

No socket work here. Look for the Q6700 on your board's CPU support list and run at least the BIOS version shown beside it; the board also has to handle quad cores on a 1066 MT/s bus, which rules out some older designs.
