Intel Xeon X5460

HarpertownLGA 771Launched Q4 2007

Adapter mod

Runs in an LGA 775 board only with the adapter sticker, the socket tabs removed and BIOS support for its core. How the mod works.

Intel Xeon X5460: 4-core, 3.16 GHz, Harpertown, LGA 771, 1333 MT/s FSB, 12 MB (2 x 6 MB) L2, 120 W TDP.

Half multipliers turn up across the Harpertown range, and the X5460 uses one: 9.5x on a 1333 MT/s bus for 3.16 GHz. That puts it a bin above the X5450 at the same 120 W TDP and 63 °C Tcase. It carries 12 MB of L2 as 2 x 6 MB, SSE4.1, which some newer software expects, VT-x and Enhanced SpeedStep, and ARK gives a VID range of 0.85 V to 1.35 V. Launch quarter is Q4 2007; C0 SLANP reports CPUID 10676 and E0 SLBBA reports 1067A. It fits an old workstation board with heavy power delivery and room for a large tower cooler.

A BIOS needs a microcode update matching the CPUID (and, for Xeons, the LGA 771 platform ID). See LGA 771 Xeon microcode and how to read your stepping.

Mod notes

Closest LGA 775 desktop chip: Core 2 Quad Q9650 (3 GHz, 1333 MT/s, 12 MB (2 x 6 MB)). A board that lists it is the best sign it can run the Xeon X5460.

Make sure the board runs 45 nm Core 2 quads and that its power delivery is built for 120 W chips, then fit the adapter sticker, cut the socket's two tabs, and add microcode for CPUIDs 10676 and 1067A with the LGA 771 platform ID. Pull the power cord before any work on the socket, since a board on standby power is easy to damage.

Check a specific board with the LGA 771 to 775 compatibility checker.
