Intel Xeon X5492

HarpertownLGA 771Launched Q3 2008

Adapter mod

Runs in an LGA 775 board only with the adapter sticker, the socket tabs removed and BIOS support for its core. How the mod works.

Intel Xeon X5492: 4-core, 3.4 GHz, Harpertown, LGA 771, 1600 MT/s FSB, 12 MB (2 x 6 MB) L2, 150 W TDP.

No Harpertown in this database clocks higher than the X5492: 3.4 GHz from a 1600 MT/s bus and an 8.5x multiplier. Its launch quarter is Q3 2008, and only the E0 stepping is listed, sSpec SLBBD, CPUID 1067A. It carries a 150 W TDP with a 63 °C Tcase, plus 12 MB of L2, SSE4.1, VT-x and Enhanced SpeedStep. It belongs on a high-end LGA 775 board with strong power delivery and a 400 MHz bus. Without the bus it runs slower; without the power delivery, leave it in the drawer.

A BIOS needs a microcode update matching the CPUID (and, for Xeons, the LGA 771 platform ID). See LGA 771 Xeon microcode and how to read your stepping.

Mod notes

One microcode entry, CPUID 1067A with the LGA 771 platform ID, goes into the BIOS of a board that already runs 45 nm Core 2 quads, can feed a 150 W chip, and runs a 400 MHz bus for full speed. Add the adapter sticker and cut the two key tabs. Work unplugged and grounded, because static can damage the chip without leaving a mark.

Check a specific board with the LGA 771 to 775 compatibility checker.
