Intel Xeon X5482

Adapter mod

Runs in an LGA 775 board only with the adapter sticker, the socket tabs removed and BIOS support for its core. How the mod works.

Intel Xeon X5482: 4-core, 3.2 GHz, Harpertown, LGA 771, 1600 MT/s FSB, 12 MB (2 x 6 MB) L2, 150 W TDP.

Rated at 150 W, the X5482 shares the top heat rating among the Harpertowns in this database with the X5492. It runs 3.2 GHz from a 1600 MT/s bus and an 8x multiplier, with 12 MB of L2, SSE4.1, VT-x and Enhanced SpeedStep. Tcase is 63 °C, measured at the center of the heat spreader. Steppings are C0 SLANZ, CPUID 10676, and E0 SLBBG, CPUID 1067A. This chip only makes sense on a board with heavy power delivery and a 400 MHz bus, under a large cooler; on a modest board, a lower-TDP Harpertown is the saner choice.

A BIOS needs a microcode update matching the CPUID (and, for Xeons, the LGA 771 platform ID). See LGA 771 Xeon microcode and how to read your stepping.

Mod notes

Closest LGA 775 desktop chip: Core 2 Extreme QX9770 (3.2 GHz, 1600 MT/s, 12 MB (2 x 6 MB)). A board that lists it is the best sign it can run the Xeon X5482.

Do not try this one on a modest board: it needs 45 nm Core 2 quad support and power delivery built for 150 W, and without a 400 MHz bus it runs slower. The mod is the usual sticker, two cut socket tabs, and microcode for 10676 and 1067A with the LGA 771 platform ID. Weak regulators running at this load can fail and leave the board dead.

Check a specific board with the LGA 771 to 775 compatibility checker.
