Intel Xeon E5440
Runs in an LGA 775 board only with the adapter sticker, the socket tabs removed and BIOS support for its core. How the mod works.
Intel Xeon E5440: 4-core, 2.83 GHz, Harpertown, LGA 771, 1333 MT/s FSB, 12 MB (2 x 6 MB) L2, 80 W TDP.
ARK and Wikipedia cannot agree on when the E5440 arrived: ARK says Q1 2008, Wikipedia November 11, 2007, and the table keeps Intel's quarter. The chip itself is settled. It runs 2.83 GHz from a 1333 MT/s bus with an 8.5x multiplier, carries 12 MB of L2 as 2 x 6 MB, and stays at 80 W. ARK also marks it Embedded Options Available. SSE4.1, VT-x and Enhanced SpeedStep are all present. Steppings are C0 SLANS with CPUID 10676 and E0 SLBBJ with 1067A. It is a strong all-round quad for an older board that cannot supply an X-series part.

A BIOS needs a microcode update matching the CPUID (and, for Xeons, the LGA 771 platform ID). See LGA 771 Xeon microcode and how to read your stepping.
Mod notes
Closest LGA 775 desktop chip: Core 2 Quad Q9500 (2.83 GHz, 1333 MT/s, 6 MB (2 x 3 MB)). A board that lists it is the best sign it can run the Xeon E5440.
Use a board that runs 45 nm Core 2 quads, apply the sticker, cut both key tabs from the LGA 775 socket, and add BIOS microcode for 10676 and 1067A with the LGA 771 platform ID. The tab cut cannot be undone and voids whatever warranty the board had left.
Check a specific board with the LGA 771 to 775 compatibility checker.
