Intel Xeon E5450

HarpertownLGA 771Launched Q4 2007

Adapter mod

Runs in an LGA 775 board only with the adapter sticker, the socket tabs removed and BIOS support for its core. How the mod works.

Intel Xeon E5450: 4-core, 3.0 GHz, Harpertown, LGA 771, 1333 MT/s FSB, 12 MB (2 x 6 MB) L2, 80 W TDP.

Sharing its 3.0 GHz clock and 1333 MT/s bus with the X5450, the E5450 sits in the 80 W class instead, which is kinder to an older board's power delivery and to the cooler. Inside are two 45 nm dies with 6 MB of L2 each, 12 MB in total, plus SSE4.1, VT-x and Enhanced SpeedStep. ARK gives a Tcase of 67 °C and a VID range of 0.85 V to 1.35 V. The C0 stepping wears SLANQ and reports CPUID 10676; the E0 wears SLBBM and reports 1067A. Among the 80 W Harpertowns on a 1333 MT/s bus, none clocks higher.

A BIOS needs a microcode update matching the CPUID (and, for Xeons, the LGA 771 platform ID). See LGA 771 Xeon microcode and how to read your stepping.

Mod notes

Closest LGA 775 desktop chip: Core 2 Quad Q9650 (3 GHz, 1333 MT/s, 12 MB (2 x 6 MB)). A board that lists it is the best sign it can run the Xeon E5450.

No surprises here: a board with 45 nm Core 2 quad support, the adapter sticker, the two socket tabs cut off, and microcode for CPUIDs 10676 and 1067A using the LGA 771 platform ID. Take your time with the cut, because a slip bends pins and the tabs never grow back.

Check a specific board with the LGA 771 to 775 compatibility checker.
