Intel Xeon X5472
Runs in an LGA 775 board only with the adapter sticker, the socket tabs removed and BIOS support for its core. How the mod works.
Intel Xeon X5472: 4-core, 3.0 GHz, Harpertown, LGA 771, 1600 MT/s FSB, 12 MB (2 x 6 MB) L2, 120 W TDP.
Two things set the X5472 apart: a 1600 MT/s bus and a 120 W TDP. Its 3.0 GHz comes from a 7.5x multiplier on that bus, so a board limited to slower buses runs it below rating. ARK gives a Tcase of 63 °C and a VID range of 0.85 V to 1.35 V. Inside are two 45 nm dies with 6 MB of L2 each, plus SSE4.1, VT-x and Enhanced SpeedStep. C0 parts are SLASA, CPUID 10676; E0 parts are SLBBB, CPUID 1067A. The E5472 offers the same clock and bus in a lower TDP class, which is easier on an older board's power delivery.

Steppings and microcode IDs
| Stepping | CPUID | sSpec |
|---|---|---|
| C0 | 10676 | SLASA |
| E0 | 1067A | SLBBB |
A BIOS needs a microcode update matching the CPUID (and, for Xeons, the LGA 771 platform ID). See LGA 771 Xeon microcode and how to read your stepping.
Mod notes
The board needs 45 nm Core 2 quad support, a 400 MHz bus for full speed, and power delivery that can carry 120 W. Then it is the adapter sticker, the two socket tabs removed, and microcode for 10676 and 1067A with the LGA 771 platform ID. Go gently on the tabs, since forcing them can crack the socket housing.
Check a specific board with the LGA 771 to 775 compatibility checker.
