Intel Xeon E5472

HarpertownLGA 771Launched Q4 2007

Adapter mod

Runs in an LGA 775 board only with the adapter sticker, the socket tabs removed and BIOS support for its core. How the mod works.

Intel Xeon E5472: 4-core, 3.0 GHz, Harpertown, LGA 771, 1600 MT/s FSB, 12 MB (2 x 6 MB) L2, 80 W TDP.

Pairing 3.0 GHz with a 1600 MT/s bus and a 7.5x multiplier, the E5472 matches the E5450's clock on the faster bus while keeping the 80 W rating. It has 12 MB of L2 in two 6 MB halves, SSE4.1, which some newer software expects, VT-x and Enhanced SpeedStep. ARK puts Tcase at 67 °C, measured at the center of the heat spreader rather than inside the cores. Steppings are C0 SLANR, CPUID 10676, and E0 SLBBH, CPUID 1067A. Its edge depends on the board: without a 400 MHz bus, it simply runs slower.

A BIOS needs a microcode update matching the CPUID (and, for Xeons, the LGA 771 platform ID). See LGA 771 Xeon microcode and how to read your stepping.

Mod notes

The board needs 45 nm Core 2 quad support and a 400 MHz bus to run it at full clock; slower boards run it below its rating. Fit the adapter sticker, cut the two key tabs, and add microcode for CPUIDs 10676 and 1067A with the LGA 771 platform ID. That socket change is permanent, so do it on a board you plan to keep for this chip.

Check a specific board with the LGA 771 to 775 compatibility checker.
