Intel Core 2 Extreme QX6700

KentsfieldLGA 775Launched Q4 2006

Native LGA 775

Drops into a supported LGA 775 board as it is; check the board's CPU list. How to check.

Intel Core 2 Extreme QX6700: 4-core, 2.66 GHz, Kentsfield, LGA 775, 1066 MT/s FSB, 8 MB (2 x 4 MB) L2, 130 W TDP.

Kentsfield is two dual-core dies sharing one package, and the QX6700 shows it in the cache figure: 8 MB of L2 split into two 4 MB halves, one per die. ARK dates it Q4 2006, which makes it the earliest Core 2 Extreme quad in this database. It came in a single stepping, B3 (CPUID 6F7, sSpec SL9UL; the sSpec is the code printed on the lid), so there is only one CPUID for a board's BIOS to know. Plan the build around the 130 W TDP: a large tower cooler, decent case airflow and a board with strong power delivery. Tcase, the maximum temperature at the center of the heat spreader, is 64.5 °C. It brings VT-x for virtual machines but no SSE4.1.

A BIOS needs a microcode update matching the CPUID (and, for Xeons, the LGA 771 platform ID). See LGA 771 Xeon microcode and how to read your stepping.

Mod notes

Nothing to cut or stick: this is a native LGA 775 chip. Check the board maker's CPU support list for the QX6700 in stepping B3 and the BIOS version that adds it, and make sure the board's power delivery is rated for a 130 W quad.
