Intel Xeon X3370
Drops into a supported LGA 775 board as it is; check the board's CPU list. How to check.
Intel Xeon X3370: 4-core, 3.0 GHz, Yorkfield, LGA 775, 1333 MT/s FSB, 12 MB (2 x 6 MB) L2, 95 W TDP.
Clock, bus and cache all match the Core 2 Extreme QX9650; the X3370 just carries the 95 W rating of a regular Xeon and a higher Tcase limit, 71.4 °C. Its desktop equivalent is the Core 2 Quad Q9650, down to the E0 stepping and the Q3 2008 launch. Only E0 shipped, as SLB8Z with CPUID 1067A, so one microcode entry covers every X3370. The 9x multiplier on the 1333 MT/s bus gives 3.0 GHz with 12 MB of L2, SSE4.1 for software that expects it and VT-x for virtual machines. That combination suits a VT-x home server or a late LGA 775 desktop that wants the most from its socket.

Steppings and microcode IDs
| Stepping | CPUID | sSpec |
|---|---|---|
| E0 | 1067A | SLB8Z |
A BIOS needs a microcode update matching the CPUID (and, for Xeons, the LGA 771 platform ID). See LGA 771 Xeon microcode and how to read your stepping.
Mod notes
No adapter, no tab cutting. The X3370 needs a board whose CPU list includes it and a BIOS at least as new as the one the list names; boards that predate 45 nm quads may never qualify.
