Intel Core 2 Quad Q9505

YorkfieldLGA 775Launched Q3 2009

Native LGA 775

Drops into a supported LGA 775 board as it is; check the board's CPU list. How to check.

Intel Core 2 Quad Q9505: 4-core, 2.83 GHz, Yorkfield, LGA 775, 1333 MT/s FSB, 6 MB (2 x 3 MB) L2, 95 W TDP.

Easy to misread as the Q9550, the Q9505 is the smaller-cache chip: 6 MB of L2 as 2 x 3 MB at 2.83 GHz, a multiplier of 8.5 on a 1333 MT/s bus. It launched in Q3 2009 as SLGYY, R0 stepping, CPUID 1067A, rated 95 W with a 71.4 °C Tcase and a VID of 0.85 V to 1.3625 V. VID is the voltage the chip asks the board for. Clock, cache, bus and TDP match the Q9500 exactly, and of the two, the Q9505 is the one in Intel's spec update. VT-x and SSE4.1 are present, so virtual machines and software built for SSE4.1 are covered.

A BIOS needs a microcode update matching the CPUID (and, for Xeons, the LGA 771 platform ID). See LGA 771 Xeon microcode and how to read your stepping.

Mod notes

No physical change. When you read the board's CPU list, check that the line says Q9505 and not Q9550 or Q9500, because the names are easy to confuse and the entries are separate.
