Intel Xeon E5220
Runs in an LGA 775 board only with the adapter sticker, the socket tabs removed and BIOS support for its core. How the mod works.
Intel Xeon E5220: 2-core, 2.33 GHz, Wolfdale, LGA 771, 1333 MT/s FSB, 6 MB (shared) L2, 65 W TDP.
Middle of the Wolfdale-DP pack, the E5220 runs 2.33 GHz from a 1333 MT/s bus and a multiplier of 7, with 6 MB of shared L2 on a 45 nm die and a 65 W TDP. Tcase is 66 °C; VID runs 0.85 V to 1.35 V. ARK marks it with embedded options, and the launch was Q1 2008. Compared with the E5205 it gets a faster bus and a higher clock, and next to the Woodcrest 5140 at a similar clock it adds more cache and SSE4.1, which some newer software expects. VT-x and Enhanced SpeedStep make it a calm choice for a home server or a light virtual machine box.

Steppings and microcode IDs
| Stepping | CPUID | sSpec |
|---|---|---|
| C0 | 10676 | SLANF |
| E0 | 1067A | SLBAT |
A BIOS needs a microcode update matching the CPUID (and, for Xeons, the LGA 771 platform ID). See LGA 771 Xeon microcode and how to read your stepping.
Mod notes
Mod it like any 45 nm LGA 771 Xeon: sticker on the CPU, both key tabs removed from the LGA 775 socket, and microcode for 10676 and 1067A carrying the LGA 771 platform ID, in a BIOS for a board that lists 45 nm Core 2 Duo at 1333 MT/s. A flash interrupted halfway can brick the board, so run it on steady power and keep a backup image.
Check a specific board with the LGA 771 to 775 compatibility checker.
