Intel Xeon X5260

WolfdaleLGA 771Launched Q4 2007

Adapter mod

Runs in an LGA 775 board only with the adapter sticker, the socket tabs removed and BIOS support for its core. How the mod works.

Intel Xeon X5260: 2-core, 3.33 GHz, Wolfdale, LGA 771, 1333 MT/s FSB, 6 MB (shared) L2, 80 W TDP.

With the X5260 the dual-core Wolfdale-DP line moves into its 80 W tier: 3.33 GHz from a 1333 MT/s bus and a multiplier of 10, two cores and 6 MB of shared L2 on 45 nm. That TDP asks for a proper tower cooler and a board with sturdy power delivery. Tcase is 66 °C. Launched in Q4 2007, it is listed in C0 (CPUID 10676, SLANJ) and E0 (CPUID 1067A, SLBAS). Enhanced SpeedStep, VT-x and SSE4.1 are all present. In an old build it suits software that leans on one or two fast cores more than on core count.

A BIOS needs a microcode update matching the CPUID (and, for Xeons, the LGA 771 platform ID). See LGA 771 Xeon microcode and how to read your stepping.

Mod notes

Closest LGA 775 desktop chip: Core 2 Duo E8600 (3.33 GHz, 1333 MT/s, 6 MB (shared)). A board that lists it is the best sign it can run the Xeon X5260.

Sticker on the CPU, two socket tabs cut, and microcode for 10676 and 1067A with the LGA 771 platform ID, on a board that already runs 45 nm Core 2 Duo at 1333 MT/s and whose power delivery is comfortable with an 80 W chip. Power off, unplug and ground yourself first; a wrong move at the socket risks bent pins that no BIOS update will fix.

Check a specific board with the LGA 771 to 775 compatibility checker.
