Intel Xeon X5270

WolfdaleLGA 771Launched Q3 2008

Adapter mod

Runs in an LGA 775 board only with the adapter sticker, the socket tabs removed and BIOS support for its core. How the mod works.

Intel Xeon X5270: 2-core, 3.5 GHz, Wolfdale, LGA 771, 1333 MT/s FSB, 6 MB (shared) L2, 80 W TDP.

The fastest clock among the dual-core Wolfdale-DP Xeons, 3.5 GHz, comes from a half multiplier: a 333 MHz bus clock times 10.5. Behind it sit 6 MB of shared L2, a 45 nm die and an 80 W TDP. Its Tcase is 61 °C, lower than on the X5260, so cooling deserves more care than the shared TDP suggests. Launched in Q3 2008, it has only one listed stepping: E0, CPUID 1067A, sSpec SLBAQ. VT-x, Enhanced SpeedStep and SSE4.1 are all present. For a dual-core LGA 775 build where clock speed counts, this is the top of the line.

A BIOS needs a microcode update matching the CPUID (and, for Xeons, the LGA 771 platform ID). See LGA 771 Xeon microcode and how to read your stepping.

Mod notes

Closest LGA 775 desktop chip: Core 2 Duo E8600 (3.33 GHz, 1333 MT/s, 6 MB (shared)). A board that lists it is the best sign it can run the Xeon X5270.

Apply the adapter sticker, cut the two key tabs from the LGA 775 socket and add microcode for CPUID 1067A with the LGA 771 platform ID; the board must already run 45 nm Core 2 Duo at 1333 MT/s and handle an 80 W chip without strain. Do the socket work with the board out of the case and under good light, since bending a pin is far easier than straightening one.

Check a specific board with the LGA 771 to 775 compatibility checker.
