Intel Xeon L5248

WolfdaleLGA 771Launched Q3 2008

Adapter mod

Runs in an LGA 775 board only with the adapter sticker, the socket tabs removed and BIOS support for its core. How the mod works.

Intel Xeon L5248: 2-core, 3.0 GHz, Wolfdale, LGA 771, 1333 MT/s FSB, 6 MB (shared) L2, 55 W TDP.

The L5248 is a low-voltage 3.0 GHz Wolfdale-DP with a 55 W rating, between the L5240 and the E5240 in TDP. Its clock comes from a 1333 MT/s bus and a multiplier of 9, with 6 MB of shared L2 on 45 nm. ARK marks it with embedded options and lists its segment as Server. Two cells are thin: ARK gives no Tcase, so the table leaves it blank, and no launch date, so the Q3 2008 is from Wikipedia. Unlike the L5240 it keeps Enhanced SpeedStep. One stepping is listed: E0, CPUID 1067A, sSpec SLBAV. VT-x and SSE4.1 round it out for a quiet home server.

A BIOS needs a microcode update matching the CPUID (and, for Xeons, the LGA 771 platform ID). See LGA 771 Xeon microcode and how to read your stepping.

Mod notes

Closest LGA 775 desktop chip: Core 2 Duo E8500 (3.16 GHz, 1333 MT/s, 6 MB (shared)). A board that lists it is the best sign it can run the Xeon L5248.

The mod needs the adapter sticker, the two key tabs removed from the socket and microcode for CPUID 1067A with the LGA 771 platform ID, on a board whose CPU list already covers 45 nm Core 2 Duo at 1333 MT/s. Cut slowly and check under a light afterward, since a stray sliver or a bent contact can short the socket.

Check a specific board with the LGA 771 to 775 compatibility checker.
