Intel Xeon E5240
Runs in an LGA 775 board only with the adapter sticker, the socket tabs removed and BIOS support for its core. How the mod works.
Intel Xeon E5240: 2-core, 3.0 GHz, Wolfdale, LGA 771, 1333 MT/s FSB, 6 MB (shared) L2, 65 W TDP.
ARK lists the E5240's vertical segment as Embedded, though it is the same Wolfdale-DP design as the server models. It runs 3.0 GHz from a 1333 MT/s bus and a multiplier of 9, with 6 MB of shared L2, a 65 W TDP and a Tcase of 66 °C. The L5240 and L5248 share its clock at lower TDP ratings, but the E5240 keeps Enhanced SpeedStep, which the L5240 lacks. Launch was Q1 2008, and it comes in C0 (SLAND) and E0 (SLBAW). For an old build it is a quick everyday dual core, with VT-x for virtual machines and SSE4.1.

Steppings and microcode IDs
| Stepping | CPUID | sSpec |
|---|---|---|
| C0 | 10676 | SLAND |
| E0 | 1067A | SLBAW |
A BIOS needs a microcode update matching the CPUID (and, for Xeons, the LGA 771 platform ID). See LGA 771 Xeon microcode and how to read your stepping.
Mod notes
Closest LGA 775 desktop chip: Core 2 Duo E8500 (3.16 GHz, 1333 MT/s, 6 MB (shared)). A board that lists it is the best sign it can run the Xeon E5240.
Apply the adapter sticker, cut the two socket keys, and add microcode for CPUID 10676 (SLAND) and 1067A (SLBAW) with the LGA 771 platform ID, on a board already running 45 nm Core 2 Duo at 1333 MT/s. Keep a backup of the old BIOS file before flashing; if the new image fails, that copy is the way back.
Check a specific board with the LGA 771 to 775 compatibility checker.
