Intel Xeon X5272
Runs in an LGA 775 board only with the adapter sticker, the socket tabs removed and BIOS support for its core. How the mod works.
Intel Xeon X5272: 2-core, 3.4 GHz, Wolfdale, LGA 771, 1600 MT/s FSB, 6 MB (shared) L2, 80 W TDP.
The X5272 is the only dual-core Wolfdale-DP Xeon built for a 1600 MT/s bus: a 400 MHz bus clock times 8.5 gives 3.4 GHz. That bus is both its point and its catch in an LGA 775 conversion. Two cores share 6 MB of L2 on 45 nm, with an 80 W TDP and a Tcase of 66 °C. ARK gives the launch as Q4 2007, and it is listed in C0 (CPUID 10676, SLANH) and E0 (CPUID 1067A, SLBAR). SSE4.1, which some newer software expects, VT-x and Enhanced SpeedStep are all present. On a board limited to a slower bus, the X5270 makes more sense.

Steppings and microcode IDs
| Stepping | CPUID | sSpec |
|---|---|---|
| C0 | 10676 | SLANH |
| E0 | 1067A | SLBAR |
A BIOS needs a microcode update matching the CPUID (and, for Xeons, the LGA 771 platform ID). See LGA 771 Xeon microcode and how to read your stepping.
Mod notes
Beyond the adapter sticker, the two cut socket tabs and microcode for 10676 and 1067A with the LGA 771 platform ID, it wants a 45 nm Core 2 board that runs a 400 MHz bus, or it runs below its rated clock, and power delivery sized for an 80 W chip. A power cut while flashing the modded BIOS can leave the board dead, so keep a backup and flash from a steady outlet.
Check a specific board with the LGA 771 to 775 compatibility checker.
