Intel Xeon E5405
Runs in an LGA 775 board only with the adapter sticker, the socket tabs removed and BIOS support for its core. How the mod works.
Intel Xeon E5405: 4-core, 2.0 GHz, Harpertown, LGA 771, 1333 MT/s FSB, 12 MB (2 x 6 MB) L2, 80 W TDP.
At the bottom of the 80 W Harpertown range, the E5405 runs four 45 nm cores at 2.0 GHz on a 1333 MT/s bus, with 12 MB of L2 as 2 x 6 MB. The smaller process brings SSE4.1, which some newer software expects, and a VID range of 0.85 V to 1.35 V. Unlike the E5410 above it, it lacks Enhanced SpeedStep, Intel's clock and voltage scaling. TDP is 80 W and Tcase 67 °C. Two steppings exist: C0 with CPUID 10676 on SLAP2, and E0 with 1067A on SLBBP. That is a lot of cache and four cores for modest heat, suited to a home server where clock speed matters less.

Steppings and microcode IDs
| Stepping | CPUID | sSpec |
|---|---|---|
| C0 | 10676 | SLAP2 |
| E0 | 1067A | SLBBP |
A BIOS needs a microcode update matching the CPUID (and, for Xeons, the LGA 771 platform ID). See LGA 771 Xeon microcode and how to read your stepping.
Mod notes
Harpertown needs a board that already runs 45 nm Core 2 quads, plus the adapter sticker, the two key tabs cut from the socket, and microcode for CPUIDs 10676 and 1067A with the LGA 771 platform ID. Keep the power steady while the modified BIOS is written, since an interrupted flash can brick the board.
