Intel Xeon L5408

HarpertownLGA 771Launched Q1 2008

Adapter mod

Runs in an LGA 775 board only with the adapter sticker, the socket tabs removed and BIOS support for its core. How the mod works.

Intel Xeon L5408: 4-core, 2.13 GHz, Harpertown, LGA 771, 1066 MT/s FSB, 12 MB (2 x 6 MB) L2, 40 W TDP.

ARK files the L5408 under the Embedded segment rather than Server. It is a 40 W Harpertown at 2.13 GHz: a 266 MHz bus clock times 8, with the bus quoted as 1066 MT/s. Even at that power it keeps 12 MB of L2, SSE4.1, VT-x and Enhanced SpeedStep. Its Tcase, the limit at the center of the heat spreader, is 72 °C, a higher ceiling than the L5410 gets. Steppings are C0 SLAP5 with CPUID 10676 and E0 SLBBT with 1067A, and Intel's launch quarter is Q1 2008. It suits an always-on machine where heat matters more than speed.

A BIOS needs a microcode update matching the CPUID (and, for Xeons, the LGA 771 platform ID). See LGA 771 Xeon microcode and how to read your stepping.

Mod notes

A board that runs 45 nm Core 2 quads, the adapter sticker, the socket's two tabs cut out, and microcode for 10676 and 1067A with the LGA 771 platform ID: that is the whole list. The cut is the risky part, since a knife that wanders can flatten a row of socket contacts.

Check a specific board with the LGA 771 to 775 compatibility checker.
