Intel Xeon E5335

ClovertownLGA 771Launched Q1 2007

Adapter mod

Runs in an LGA 775 board only with the adapter sticker, the socket tabs removed and BIOS support for its core. How the mod works.

Intel Xeon E5335: 4-core, 2.0 GHz, Clovertown, LGA 771, 1333 MT/s FSB, 8 MB (2 x 4 MB) L2, 80 W TDP.

With the E5335, the 80 W Clovertowns move to a 1333 MT/s bus: 2.0 GHz, four cores, 8 MB of L2 across two dies, VT-x, no SSE4.1. Two points are disputed. ARK dates it Q1 2007, Wikipedia gives November 14, 2006, and the table uses Intel's quarter. Wikipedia's Clovertown list also says it has no EIST, yet ARK and Intel's spec update both say yes for SL9YK, SLAC7 and SLAEK, so the table says yes. ARK also flags it Embedded Options Available, the marker Intel used for parts it offered on its embedded roadmap. In an old board it behaves like a modest 65 nm quad, fine for a home server or for running several programs at once.

A BIOS needs a microcode update matching the CPUID (and, for Xeons, the LGA 771 platform ID). See LGA 771 Xeon microcode and how to read your stepping.

Mod notes

The board has to run Kentsfield quads already; after that it is the sticker on the CPU, the two key tabs cut from the socket, and BIOS microcode for CPUIDs 6F7 and 6FB carrying the LGA 771 platform ID. Unplug the machine and touch bare case metal first, since static can damage both chip and board.

Check a specific board with the LGA 771 to 775 compatibility checker.
