Intel Xeon L5310

ClovertownLGA 771Launched Q1 2007

Adapter mod

Runs in an LGA 775 board only with the adapter sticker, the socket tabs removed and BIOS support for its core. How the mod works.

Intel Xeon L5310: 4-core, 1.6 GHz, Clovertown, LGA 771, 1066 MT/s FSB, 8 MB (2 x 4 MB) L2, 50 W TDP.

Low voltage is the point of the L5310: a 50 W TDP and a VID range of only 1.1 V to 1.25 V, narrower than the standard parts get. Clock and bus match the E5310, 1.6 GHz on 1066 MT/s, with the same 8 MB of L2. The catch is a Tcase of 60 °C, the temperature limit at the center of the lid, so a small cooler still needs good contact. Enhanced SpeedStep is absent: ARK and Intel's spec update agree on no, while Wikipedia's Clovertown list implies it is there, and the table says no. It suits a low-power quad in a small case or an always-on box with VT-x for a virtual machine or two.

A BIOS needs a microcode update matching the CPUID (and, for Xeons, the LGA 771 platform ID). See LGA 771 Xeon microcode and how to read your stepping.

Mod notes

Clovertown rules apply: a board with Kentsfield support, the adapter sticker on the chip, the socket's two key tabs removed, and microcode for CPUIDs 6F7 and 6FB with the LGA 771 platform ID added to the BIOS. Dump the current BIOS to a file and keep it off the machine, because that backup is the only way back from a bad flash.

Check a specific board with the LGA 771 to 775 compatibility checker.
