Intel Xeon E5410

HarpertownLGA 771Launched Q4 2007

Adapter mod

Runs in an LGA 775 board only with the adapter sticker, the socket tabs removed and BIOS support for its core. How the mod works.

Intel Xeon E5410: 4-core, 2.33 GHz, Harpertown, LGA 771, 1333 MT/s FSB, 12 MB (2 x 6 MB) L2, 80 W TDP.

One bin above the E5405, the E5410 runs 2.33 GHz and, unlike that chip, keeps Enhanced SpeedStep. Its 1333 MT/s bus works with a 7x multiplier. Like its siblings it carries 12 MB of L2, 2 x 6 MB across two dies, plus SSE4.1 and VT-x for virtual machines. ARK lists a Tcase of 67 °C and VIDs from 0.85 V to 1.35 V. Intel's launch quarter is Q4 2007. Two steppings exist: C0 SLANW with CPUID 10676, and E0 SLBBC with 1067A. With an 80 W TDP and Intel's clock and voltage scaling, it is a balanced pick for a family desktop that should stay quiet.

A BIOS needs a microcode update matching the CPUID (and, for Xeons, the LGA 771 platform ID). See LGA 771 Xeon microcode and how to read your stepping.

Mod notes

Closest LGA 775 desktop chip: Core 2 Quad Q8200 (2.33 GHz, 1333 MT/s, 4 MB (2 x 2 MB)). A board that lists it is the best sign it can run the Xeon E5410.

Choose a board whose BIOS already supports 45 nm Yorkfield quads, put the sticker on, cut the two socket tabs, and insert microcode for 10676 and 1067A tagged with the LGA 771 platform ID. Keep a copy of the current BIOS somewhere safe first; that backup is what rescues a board after a failed flash.

Check a specific board with the LGA 771 to 775 compatibility checker.
