Intel Core 2 Quad Q8200S

YorkfieldLGA 775Launched Q1 2009

Native LGA 775

Drops into a supported LGA 775 board as it is; check the board's CPU list. How to check.

Intel Core 2 Quad Q8200S: 4-core, 2.33 GHz, Yorkfield, LGA 775, 1333 MT/s FSB, 4 MB (2 x 2 MB) L2, 65 W TDP.

Take the Q8200, bring its power rating down to 65 W, and you have the Q8200S. Clock, bus and cache stay put: 2.33 GHz, 1333 MT/s, 4 MB of L2 as 2 x 2 MB. It launched later, in Q1 2009, and Intel sets its Tcase at 76.3 °C, a higher limit than the standard Q8200 gets. That makes it a sensible quad for a small case or a board with modest power delivery. Both sSpecs are R0, CPUID 1067A. ARK and Intel's spec update say SLG9T has no VT-x, and the table says no. Wikipedia also lists a later SLGSS, part AT80580AJ0534ML, where the ML suffix marks VT-x, but it is absent from Intel's spec update, so VT-x may exist on that sSpec only. Check the lid before planning virtual machines.

A BIOS needs a microcode update matching the CPUID (and, for Xeons, the LGA 771 platform ID). See LGA 771 Xeon microcode and how to read your stepping.

Mod notes

Native LGA 775, so the job is reading, not cutting: make sure the Q8200S itself appears on the board maker's CPU list rather than assuming the Q8200 entry covers it, and note the BIOS version it needs. A 65 W rating is easy on a board's power delivery, but the BIOS still has to know the chip.
