Intel Core 2 Quad Q8400
Drops into a supported LGA 775 board as it is; check the board's CPU list. How to check.
Intel Core 2 Quad Q8400: 4-core, 2.66 GHz, Yorkfield, LGA 775, 1333 MT/s FSB, 4 MB (2 x 2 MB) L2, 95 W TDP.
Top of the Q8000 line: four Yorkfield cores at 2.66 GHz from a multiplier of 8 on the 1333 MT/s bus, still with the small 4 MB of L2 (2 x 2 MB). The Q9400 runs the same clock with more cache, so treat the Q8400 as its trimmed cousin. Unlike the Q8200 and Q8300, it has VT-x without conditions, which makes it simple to plan around for virtual machines. The data lists one sSpec, SLGT6, on the R0 stepping with CPUID 1067A, launched in Q2 2009. TDP is 95 W and Tcase 71.4 °C, the limit at the heat spreader center. VID, the voltage the chip requests from the board, spans 0.85 V to 1.3625 V, and SSE4.1 is present.

Steppings and microcode IDs
| Stepping | CPUID | sSpec |
|---|---|---|
| R0 | 1067A | SLGT6 |
A BIOS needs a microcode update matching the CPUID (and, for Xeons, the LGA 771 platform ID). See LGA 771 Xeon microcode and how to read your stepping.
Mod notes
No modding needed. Find the Q8400 on your board's support list together with the minimum BIOS version; a board built before 45 nm quads may need that update or never get one, so back up the current BIOS before you flash.
