Intel Xeon 5120

WoodcrestLGA 771Launched Q2 2006

Adapter mod

Runs in an LGA 775 board only with the adapter sticker, the socket tabs removed and BIOS support for its core. How the mod works.

Intel Xeon 5120: 2-core, 1.86 GHz, Woodcrest, LGA 771, 1066 MT/s FSB, 4 MB (shared) L2, 65 W TDP.

One step above the 5110, the 5120 runs its two Woodcrest cores at 1.86 GHz from a 1066 MT/s bus and a multiplier of 7, with 4 MB of shared L2 and a 65 W TDP. That TDP is modest, so an ordinary tower cooler and the power delivery of a typical LGA 775 board have little to complain about. Tcase, the maximum temperature at the center of the heat spreader rather than at the cores, is 65 °C. As with the 5110, ARK claims Enhanced SpeedStep while Intel's spec update gives none for SL9RY, SLABQ or SLAGD. The table goes with the spec update, so expect the chip to lack Intel's clock and voltage scaling. VT-x is present for virtual machines.

A BIOS needs a microcode update matching the CPUID (and, for Xeons, the LGA 771 platform ID). See LGA 771 Xeon microcode and how to read your stepping.

Mod notes

The mod has three parts: the adapter sticker on the chip, both key tabs removed from the LGA 775 socket, and the BIOS given microcode for CPUID 6F6 and 6FB tagged with the LGA 771 platform ID. Pick a board whose CPU list already includes Conroe Core 2 Duo, and back up the current BIOS before you touch it, because a failed flash can leave the board dead.

Check a specific board with the LGA 771 to 775 compatibility checker.
