Intel Xeon 5160

WoodcrestLGA 771Launched Q2 2006

Adapter mod

Runs in an LGA 775 board only with the adapter sticker, the socket tabs removed and BIOS support for its core. How the mod works.

Intel Xeon 5160: 2-core, 3.0 GHz, Woodcrest, LGA 771, 1333 MT/s FSB, 4 MB (shared) L2, 80 W TDP.

Top of the Woodcrest range: 3.0 GHz from a 1333 MT/s bus and a multiplier of 9, two cores sharing 4 MB of L2. It is also the only 5100 model rated at 80 W, so give it a cooler with some headroom and a board whose power delivery is not already working hard. Tcase is 65 °C, measured at the center of the heat spreader. For an old build, this is the Woodcrest to choose when clock speed matters more than heat, with Enhanced SpeedStep and VT-x but no SSE4.1. ARK's archived page gives no launch date; the Q2 2006 in the table comes from Wikipedia. Both steppings are listed: B2 as SL9RT or SLABS, G0 as SLAG9.

A BIOS needs a microcode update matching the CPUID (and, for Xeons, the LGA 771 platform ID). See LGA 771 Xeon microcode and how to read your stepping.

Mod notes

Closest LGA 775 desktop chip: Core 2 Duo E6850 (3 GHz, 1333 MT/s, 4 MB (shared)). A board that lists it is the best sign it can run the Xeon 5160.

Sticker on, both tabs cut, and microcode for CPUID 6F6 and 6FB with the LGA 771 platform ID added to the BIOS of a board that runs Conroe Core 2 Duo and whose power delivery is rated for an 80 W chip. Cutting the tabs is permanent, and a crooked sticker can keep the board from starting, so line it up against the pad grid before pressing it down.

Check a specific board with the LGA 771 to 775 compatibility checker.
