Intel Xeon 5140
Runs in an LGA 775 board only with the adapter sticker, the socket tabs removed and BIOS support for its core. How the mod works.
Intel Xeon 5140: 2-core, 2.33 GHz, Woodcrest, LGA 771, 1333 MT/s FSB, 4 MB (shared) L2, 65 W TDP.
Among the standard-voltage 5100 models, Enhanced SpeedStep starts here: unlike the 5130 below it, the 5140 has Intel's clock and voltage scaling. It runs two cores at 2.33 GHz from a 1333 MT/s bus and a multiplier of 7, with 4 MB of shared L2 and a 65 W TDP. VID, the voltage the chip asks the board for, spans 1 V to 1.5 V on the B2 stepping and 0.85 V to 1.5 V on G0. ARK marks it as available with embedded options. In an old LGA 775 build it suits a modest everyday desktop or a small virtual machine host, since VT-x is present. Like every 65 nm part it lacks SSE4.1, which some newer software expects.

Steppings and microcode IDs
| Stepping | CPUID | sSpec |
|---|---|---|
| B2 | 6F6 | SL9RW, SLABN |
| G0 | 6FB | SLAGB |
A BIOS needs a microcode update matching the CPUID (and, for Xeons, the LGA 771 platform ID). See LGA 771 Xeon microcode and how to read your stepping.
Mod notes
Same recipe as the other Woodcrests: sticker on the CPU, both tabs cut from the LGA 775 socket, and microcode for CPUID 6F6 and 6FB with the LGA 771 platform ID in the BIOS of a board that lists Conroe Core 2 Duo support. Save the current BIOS to a USB stick first, since a flash cut off by a power blip can brick the board.
Check a specific board with the LGA 771 to 775 compatibility checker.
