Intel Xeon LV 5133

WoodcrestLGA 771Launched Q2 2006

Adapter mod

Runs in an LGA 775 board only with the adapter sticker, the socket tabs removed and BIOS support for its core. How the mod works.

Intel Xeon LV 5133: 2-core, 2.2 GHz, Woodcrest, LGA 771, 800 MT/s FSB, 4 MB (shared) L2, 40 W TDP.

Odd one out among the low-voltage Woodcrests: an 800 MT/s bus with a multiplier of 11, the highest in the Woodcrest range, so a 200 MHz bus clock times 11 lands on 2.2 GHz. It keeps the family's 4 MB of shared L2 at 40 W and was sold only to OEMs. ARK gives a VID of 1.15 V to 1.25 V; Wikipedia's 1 V to 1.5 V is the generic family range, and the table uses ARK. ARK lists no Tcase, so that cell is empty. Neither sSpec appears in an Intel spec update, so both CPUIDs come from the stepping table rather than an Intel document. VT-x and Enhanced SpeedStep are present, which suits a low-heat home server.

A BIOS needs a microcode update matching the CPUID (and, for Xeons, the LGA 771 platform ID). See LGA 771 Xeon microcode and how to read your stepping.

Mod notes

Apply the adapter sticker, cut the two locating tabs from the LGA 775 socket, and add microcode for 6F6 (SLABJ) and 6FB (SLAG5) with the LGA 771 platform ID to a board that runs Conroe Core 2 Duo at an 800 MT/s bus. A bad microcode flash can kill a board as surely as a bent pin, so keep a backup of the current BIOS and a way to restore it.

Check a specific board with the LGA 771 to 775 compatibility checker.
